About Us
The Africa Youth Pastoralist Initiative (AYPI) was founded in September 2022 following a regional consultation at Lukenya University in Makueni County, Kenya. Established as a response to the urgent challenges posed by climate change within pastoralist communities, AYPI emerged with the support of key organizations such as CGIAR, ILRI, GCSAYN, PROCASUR, and IYRP. The organization’s mission is to empower and unite youth pastoralists across Africa, fostering resilience, prosperity, and sustainable practices in the face of environmental challenges. AYPI focuses on key objectives, including empowering youth, advocating for policy changes, integrating technology, enhancing security and livelihoods, and expanding collaboration. With its roots in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, AYPI aims to expand its geographical scope to address the diverse ecological zones and challenges faced by pastoralist communities throughout the African continent.
Our Mission
AYPI’s mission is to empower youth pastoralists as we address the unique challenges they face. Our pastoral traditional way of life is threatened by shifting weather patterns, droughts, and resources scarcity as a result of the changing climate.
Our Vision
Our vision is to become a leading organization globally in pastoral community development. To unify and amplify the pastoralist youth voices in Africa. We aspire to expand our reach and operations to more countries in the coming years.
Our Plans
- Sustainable Livestock Management: AYPI plans to promote sustainable livestock management practices, enhancing the livelihoods of pastoralists.
- Rotation grazing-promoting holistic management and rotational grazing tech.

- Education: AYPI aims to improve educational opportunities for pastoralist youth, ensuring they have access to quality education.
